Ever since Mike Brown’s shooting and the impending chaos that followed in Ferguson, as is the case with every single act of police brutality, the cop apologists have been hand waving away this event as an “isolated incident.” The hell this was a freaking isolated incident! It wasn’t even an isolated incident in Ferguson, which has a long, terrible history of police brutality.
When you have prisoners being charged with “destruction of city property” for bleeding on an officer’s uniform (after being brutalized by said officer), and when you have a police lieutenant telling his colleagues to “have a black day” and “make the jail cells more colorful,” the police brutality in your town isn’t isolated, it’s freaking systematic.
Both the War on Drugs and Terror have created an influx of military-grade equipment to local law enforcement, and with it, an increase of police raids and brutality. I don’t agree with everything John Oliver says, but I agree with him wholeheartedly when he says that it’s time to take the “f***king toys” away from the police until they learn to behave themselves.
