#12: Cookie Monster Buys A Rhyme
This skit is also very straight forward. Cookie Monster visits a bakery in order to buy something tasty and delicious. He just doesn’t know what he wants.
Gee, you think Cookie Monster of all puppets would know that bakeries sell cookies!
But no, instead, Cookie Monster wants to buy something that rhymes with “buy.” First, he eats the letter ‘I’. Then he eats the baker’s tie. All the while, he ignores the pie sitting on the counter in plain sight—that is, until Guy Smiley comes in and orders a pie.
That’s when Cookie realizes what he wants to buy, something tasty and delicious that rhymes with the word “buy”—
OMFG! COOKIE MONSTER IS EATING GUY SMILEY!
Cookie Monster is known to eat anything and everything that isn’t nailed down—and sometimes, he will even eat that!—but one thing that he restrains himself from eating is other muppets.
That is, until this sketch!
This was really out-of-character for Cookie Monster. Sure, he’s a monster, but not the scary kind. None of the monsters on Sesame Street are supposed to be scary, and they’re especially not supposed to eat people.
Because of this, when I first watched this sketch, it came as a real shock. I mean just look at him: he almost tried to bite Guy’s arm off!
It should be noted that this was one of the first appearances of Guy Smiley, and considering that he would go on to host many of Sesame Street’s game shows, it’s safe to assume that our favorite blue cookie-eating monster did not end up eating him.
Watching this as an adult, it comes across less as scary and more as silly. Even as a kid, I was never really scared of this. Shocked, but not scared.
But if you think these last two sketches are tame, you might want to prepare yourself for what’s ahead, because it’s all nightmare fuel from here!
