1 Day Until Star Wars
The newest addition to the Star Wars franchise premieres in theaters on Dec. 18. To celebrate, I’m counting down all the days until the new movie premieres by sharing Star Wars-related content.
Saying that Star Wars is “popular” would be the grossest understatement of the millennia. The movies have helped to weave the cultural zeitgeist as much as they has been woven by the zeitgeist itself. Even if you’ve never watched any of the movies, chances are, you have seen enough pop culture references to have a fair grasp of what they are about.
In fact, Kyle Kallgren of Brows Held High recently re-created an abridged version of the first movie simply by piecing together both its cultural inspirations and references. This coherent narrative of diverse and various media reveals the sheer cultural impact of Star Wars, and how the movies have not only been influenced by the cultural zeitgeist, but have influenced it in turn:
Of course, if you want a more detailed analysis of the films, I’d highly recommend watching James Rolfe’s (aka: The AVGN) brief history of Star Wars, which, in a nutshell, covers the historical and cultural influences and inspirations of the films. (Part 1 and Part 2)
And if you want a more in-depth analysis, I’d also recommend this two-hour History Channel documentary. (Yes, there was a time when the History Channel actually covered real history and not just conspiracy theories about “aliens”!)
