Xmas VGM Monday: Super Mario 64 Winter Levels
In October, I shared Halloween-related video game music. This month, I thought I’d do something similar by sharing Christmas and winter-related music. Allow me to start off this month with music from the original winter levels in Super Mario 64.
The flagship game for the Nintendo 64 has two winter-themed levels: Cool, Cool Mountain and Snowman’s Land. Both levels share the exact same background music, and in either one, the music certainly matches the winter theme:
The dominant instrument is the accordion, giving the music almost a polka vibe. You almost feel as though you’re scaling the mountains in the Alps while listening to it. You almost expect Mario give a hearty yodel at any moment. The little chimes strewn throughout especially add to the atmosphere, as they almost sound like sleigh bells.
Whether you are racing the big penguin or rescuing the little penguin in Cool, Cool Mountain, or you are scaling the giant snowman or fighting the Ice Bully in Snowman’s Land, this music will certainly place you in a winter mood. You might even find yourself clambering for your jacket.
