This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. So to celebrate, from now and throughout Sonic’s birthday this June, I’m going to be highlighting some of my favorite Sonic music for VGM Monday.
During the Sega Genesis era, the Sonic the Hedgehog games had Special Stages in which players would play a mini-game in order to obtain one of the seven Chaos Emeralds.
The music for those stages were great, but the greatest of them all, hands down, had to be the Special Stage music for the third installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The "bouncy", lighthearted nature of the melody somehow made trying to complete these stages a little less hectic and frustrating--especially since it was just so frustrating trying to get all the blue balls and rings without touching a single red ball or bumpers!
Of course, the music itself would become more stressful as the music increased tempo along with the speed of the special stage mini-game, which especially made things more infuriating as now avoiding the red balls were all the more inevitable at that point.
Either way, the Special Stage music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was, well, very special:
