This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. So to celebrate, from now and throughout Sonic’s birthday this June, I’m going to be highlighting some of my favorite Sonic music for VGM Monday.
In the mid-90s, I remember strolling through the mall and walking into a toy store to see one of the game demo systems playing the animated intro to Sonic CD. Back then, games didn’t have such animation, let along songs with actual lyrics. So this completely blew my elementary school mind. It was nothing like I had seen before for a video game.
Aside from being released on a lackluster game system (or rather, a lackluster add-on to an excellent game system), Sonic CD was one of the best Sonic games released back in the day. By far, the best thing about the game, and the one aspect that I remember most about it, was the animated intro and theme song, "Sonic Boom."
Sure, the song itself may not be grand by today’s standards, but back then, being able to listen to a song with lyrics on a 16-bit game console was something completely ahead of its time. Of course, as time went on, other Sonic games would get their own theme songs, but "Sonic Boom" pretty much set the trend, and what a trend setter it was!
