VGM Monday: Sonic Heroes Theme

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. So to celebrate, from now and throughout Sonic’s birthday this June, I’m going to be highlighting some of my favorite Sonic music for VGM Monday.

One of the biggest complaints with the Sonic games since their transition to the third dimension has been with the overabundance of characters. There are just so many Sonic characters now, so how can fans possibly play as all of them?

Enter Sonic Heroes.

This game allowed players to control as many as 12 different Sonic characters in four teams of three. Each team offered a unique gameplay experience, and each character within those teams utilized a different ability—speed, flight, or strength—that also allowed for an unique experience. Thus players had to strategically cycle through each of the three characters in order to meet the objective of each course.

The overall reaction to this game remains mixed among fans. Some fans love the game. Others don’t. But regardless of how you feel about it, there’s one thing you cannot deny: the game had a kickass theme song:

There have been plenty of awesome theme songs for the Sonic franchise, from "Live and Learn" to "Open Your Heart." But for me, "Sonic Heroes" will remain the definitive Sonic theme song. It contains the perfect amount of adrenaline that pumps you up and get you excited to play the game.
