This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. So to celebrate, from now and throughout Sonic’s birthday this June, I’m going to be highlighting some of my favorite Sonic music for VGM Monday.
The Sega Saturn may have had an epic marketing mascot (in Japan, at least), but that didn’t stop the system from being a huge flop. Perhaps its biggest mistake was not having a flagship Sonic game—or at least a good one.
While the Saturn didn’t have a traditional Sonic game, it did have Sonic R, a racing game. It sucked. What else do I need to say? The graphics were bad, the controls were bad, and the music was bad—or at least, in my opinion, so bad it’s good.
Many fans have ripped on Sonic R and its music (to the point of attempted homicide), but I, on the other hand, seem to have a soft spot for it—at least ironically!
I simply love the 80s dance vibe these songs have, despite the game being made in the 90s. Are the songs terrible? Yes, they are. But honestly, most pop songs of the 80s were terrible, and yet people love them ironically. So why not these songs?
The theme song certainly highlights the soundtrack’s 80s dance vibe, but perhaps my favorite has to be “Can You Feel The Sunshine?” By all means close your eyes and tell me you can’t imagine this song playing in an 80s night club:
