Originally, for this week’s post, I was going to share the two videos by Nostalgia Critic and Lindsay Ellis discussing how Disney villains have changed, but it seems that there are more pressing matters at hand that need to be addressed.
The live-action Beauty and the Beast remake is right around the corner. To ramp up the hype for the movie, Disney has made a big announcement concerning one of its characters—namely, that one of them is now canonically gay. That character is Gaston’s sidekick, LeFou.
Of course, not surprisingly, despite this year being 2017, this news created quite the controversy. However, quite surprisingly enough, most of the controversy isn’t being generated by religious homophobes—although one theater in a backwater town has announced that it would not show the film because of this revelation. (Boy, I'm real sure Disney will suffer in the box office because of this! /sarcasm)
No. What’s most uncanny about all of this "controversy" is that most of the hate is coming from the LGBT community. Yes, it seems as though the people most upset about LeFou being gay are gay people themselves!
I can’t really blame them. As "progressive" as it may be for Disney to finally reveal one of it’s characters to be less straight than a mountain road, it’s quite disappointing that the character in question happens to be a lackey for one of the main villains.
As for my opinion? Eh. I don’t really care. I can’t really say that I’m bothered by it one way or the other, because, again, it's 2017! I’m still looking forward to watching the film when it comes out. It’s going to take more than a minor prick (heh!) to dissuade me from watching it.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen Josh Gad’s performance of the song "Gaston", feel free to watch it:
