Earlier this week was March 7. You know what that means? It was the grand opening of the Krusty Krab 2. Or at least it was 12 years ago when The Spongebob Squarepants Movie came out.
Yeah, how uncanny is it that the Spongebob movie is more than a decade old? Or that the cartoon series itself is nearly two decades old?! And it's clearly seen better days!
I'll admit it: if Spongebob had ended with the movie, I would have been satisfied--slightly disheartened, but satisfied. Better than feeling ashamed that the series continues to linger on despite having experienced seasonal rot years ago.
The movie was clearly supposed to be the big sendoff for the series, and the overall production value clearly showed. I mean, remember the Goofy Goober music video?
By now, I'm sure most of you know that the song was based on "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister, with the music video paying homage to many of the effects and tropes of 80s music videos. And it is epic! :D
This music video, this whole movie, should have been the grand finale for the yellow sponge, and yet Nickelodeon insisted on keeping him on life support. Nick, just cut the cord already. Spongebob needs to die with dignity!
