I’m sure most of you saw the Season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty last Saturday. And I’m sure most of you are aware of the obscure nostalgic throwback made during that episode—a throwback concerning a popular restaurant franchise, a throwback to something that had long been forgotten, but has only recently resurrected into the mainstream consciousness thanks to the shameless corporate plug made by Dan Hamon and Justin Roiland.
That’s right! I’m talking about Shoney’s!
Okay! I know the real big deal last week was about Rick’s obsession with finding McDonald’s long lost Szechuan McNuggets sauce, which was released for a short time in 1998 as a tie-in promotion for Mulan.
Personally, while I could easily use that as the topic for this week’s Throwback Thursday, it would be way too easy. Not to mention everyone and their crazy grandpa has already flooded social media with demands for McDonald's to bring the sauce back. (And to their credit, it may have worked!)
But honestly, am I the only one that was more surprised by the fact that the episode featured Shoney’s? Anybody remember Shoney’s? Many claim that it’s a cheap Denny’s knock-off, but does Denny’s have a breakfast bar buffet? No sir! They do not! And that makes Shoney’s far superior.
The restaurant chain is still around, but it seems that there are fewer and fewer restaurants nowadays. The closest one to me is at least an hour away, and the closest one after that is maybe two to three hours. That’s quite a shame, because their breakfast bars are really the best.
So let's reminisce on the real nostalgic treasure that is Shoney's with some nostalgic commercials:
